About Us
Physicians and scientists created Cogent Medicine to put compelling research and
interpretation at your fingertips. This site provides registered users with strata of
reading suggestions, expert commentary, and integrated search and archive tools, layered
over the MEDLINE® database.
Our intent is to encourage users to read, by means compliant with any copyright
restrictions, the full text article referred to by bibliographic citations and author
abstracts. Abstracts are displayed only to communicate the minimum amount of
information necessary to motivate users to seek out and read the full text article.
Abstracts cannot be construed as a comprehensive representation of the contents of the
full text article. Abstracts, including copyright notices within the abstract when
supplied by the publisher, are always displayed with the citation author, title, and
source information. Cogent Medicine neither implies nor expresses a creative or
proprietary role in the abstracts or any other part of the MEDLINE® record.
MEDLINE®
MEDLINE® is the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) premier bibliographic
database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine,
the health care system, and the preclinical sciences. MEDLINE® contains bibliographic
citations and author abstracts from more than 4,000 biomedical journals published in
the United States and 70 other countries. The file contains over 11 million citations
dating back to the mid 1960's. Coverage is worldwide, but most records are from
English-language sources or have English abstracts.
NLM's MEDLINE® is reproduced and distributed by Cogent Medicine at its own expense, in full compliance with its
Lease Agreement with NLM. No endorsement by the NLM, the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the
National Institutes of Health, Cogent Medicine, or any of the products or services advertised on this system is
intended or should be inferred.
Notice to Users Who Search MEDLINE® at Cogent Medicine
Unless otherwise prohibited, organizations or institutions may download small
amounts of NLM-produced citations for redistribution. For MEDLINE, this is about 1,000
per month or 12,000 records for each year of coverage. Since NLM makes corrections and
enhancements to and performs maintenance on these records at least annually, you should
plan to replace or correct the records once a year to ensure that they are still
correct and searchable as a group.
NLM databases are produced by a U.S. government agency and as such the contents
are not covered by copyright domestically. They may be copyrighted outside the U.S. Some
NLM produced data is from copyrighted publications of the respective copyright
claimants. Users of the NLM databases are solely responsible for compliance with any
copyright restrictions and are referred to the publication data appearing in the
bibliographic citations, as well as to the copyright notices appearing in the original
publications, all of which are incorporated by reference. Users should consult legal
counsel before using NLM-produced records to be certain that their plans are in
compliance with appropriate laws.
All records must be identified as being derived from NLM databases.
Copyright Constraints
All MEDLINE® data at the Cogent Medicine site is identified as being derived from NLM
databases. Some material in the NLM databases is from copyrighted publications of the
respective copyright claimants. Users of the NLM databases are solely responsible for
compliance with any copyright restrictions and are referred to the publication data
appearing in the bibliographic citations, as well as to the copyright notices appearing
in the original publications, all of which are hereby incorporated by
reference.
No Warranties or Representations
The MEDLINE® data at the Cogent Medicine site is provided under a license agreement
with the NLM and is formulated with a reasonable standard of care. Cogent Medicine and
the NLM make no representation or warranties, expressed or implied. This includes, but
is not limited to, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular
purpose, with respect to the NLM databases, and NLM specifically disclaims any such
warranties and representations.

include errors or inaccuracies. Particularly in view of ongoing research, changes in
government regulations, and the constant flow of information relating to standards of
medical practice, no statement found within "Editor's Comments" should supersede the
